Nothobranchius krammeri By Stefano Valdesalici

In spring 2005 an extensive survey which aimed to investigate the biodiversity and distribution of Nothobranchius in whole Mozambique was conducted by Holger Hengstler and Silverio Vendo, on northern Mozambique phenotypically different population were observed and collected during this field work.

On  May 15 an unidentified Nothobranchius species was collected from an ephemeral pool, which is situated within the Meronvi River basin. This new annual killifish was recently described as Nothobranchius krammeri. The species was collected in single very large (about 350 mt in diameter) and shallow (about 0.75 mt on the deepest part) temporary pool (remaining part of a seasonal river). Shores were densely covered of water lilies (Nymphaea spp.). The water was brown, slightly turbid and the pH was neutral , KH 4, GH 10 . In the morning (around 11:00) the water temperature was 27°C in surface and 25°C 0.30 mt depth. In the late afternoon (around 16:30) the temperature was 30°C 0.2 mt depth. In the central and deeper part of the pool (sandy) an unidentified large, silvery and compressed  fish (probably Barbus spp.) was seen. Another annual killifish was collected around shores: Nothobranchius spec. "Macimboa da Praia" MZHL 2005-13 and still undescribed.  This species is quite simple to breed, the incubation time for the eggs in "dry" peat of this annual killifish is about 3-4 months. The fry are quite smaller after hatching and is better to feed also with infusorial (or at least the smllest just hatched artemia cist). This new species was described in honour of Mr.Werner Krammer, Pöttmes, Germany, a well known German aquarist and the first breeder of this species (Valdesalici, S. & Hengstler, H. 2008 aqua, International Journal of Ichthyology, 14 (4): 187-194).
